According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), every few seconds, a traffic incident responder puts their life at risk to help others on the road. Many lose their lives or sustain lifelong injuries while clearing crashes, assisting motorists, or removing debris. That’s why Crash Responder Safety Week 2025 (November 17–21) is more than an awareness campaign; it’s a call for responsibility shared by every driver, especially in a city as busy as New York.
1. Crash Responder Safety Week 2025 Honors Those Who Protect Us
The FHWA’s Crash Responder Safety Week 2025 brings together thousands of professionals in Traffic Incident Management (TIM), including:
-
Law enforcement
-
Firefighters and emergency medical technicians (EMTs)
-
Towing and recovery operators
-
Highway maintenance crews
-
Public works and transportation officials
These responders risk their lives daily to keep traffic flowing and prevent secondary crashes. The campaign reminds drivers that behind every flashing light on the the roadside is a responder’s family waiting for them to come home safely.

2. The Week Runs November 17–21, with a Different Focus Each Day
Every day of Crash Responder Safety Week 2025 highlights a different aspect of safety education.
Here’s the official schedule provided by FHWA:
| Day of Week | Messaging Focus |
|---|---|
| Monday, 11/18 | Responders Ahead! Reduce Your Speed As You Proceed. |
| Tuesday, 11/19 | Driver Education |
| Wednesday, 11/20 | Responder Training |
| Thursday, 11/21 | More Than a Crash |
| Friday, 11/22 | Slow Down, Move Over |
These themes align with the federal goal of teaching both responders and the public how to stay alert, reduce crashes, and build a stronger culture of safety on U.S. roadways.
3. The Message Is Simple: Slow Down, Move Over, and Stay Alert
In all 50 states, Move Over laws require drivers to slow down and, when safe, move into another lane when approaching stationary emergency or maintenance vehicles.
Yet surveys show many drivers remain unaware, or simply forget, these laws while on the road. During Crash Responder Safety Week 2025, motorists are urged to:
-
Reduce speed when approaching flashing lights or warning signs.
-
Move over if it’s safe to do so, giving responders extra space.
-
Eliminate distractions; no texting, no calls, no multitasking behind the wheel.
It’s a small effort that can make a life-saving difference.
4. New Yorkers Play a Critical Role in Safety Awareness
New York’s dense urban traffic creates unique challenges for roadside responders. Narrow lanes, impatient drivers, and limited visibility can turn a minor fender bender into a deadly situation.
By following the FHWA’s message,“Responders Ahead! Reduce Your Speed As You Proceed.”,drivers across NYC can help prevent serious injuries and protect those who keep the city moving.

5. Free Training Programs Help Responders Save Lives
The FHWA offers a free, four-hour National TIM Responder Training program to equip responders with the tools to manage roadway incidents safely and efficiently.
According to the FHWA TIM Program, this training:
-
Teaches responders to coordinate with multiple agencies.
-
Promotes “quick clearance” techniques to reopen roads faster.
-
Reduces secondary crashes by improving scene safety.
More than 600,000 responders nationwide have already completed this training, saving countless lives through faster, safer roadside response.
6. Crash Responder Safety Week 2025 Encourages Public Involvement
Beyond training and policy, Crash Responder Safety Week 2025 invites participation from every driver. The FHWA encourages organizations, schools, and agencies to join as CRSW Allies in Action by:
-
Hosting community events or social media campaigns.
-
Sharing educational flyers or videos using the CRSW Outreach Toolkit.
-
Signing the National CRSW Proclamation to publicly commit to roadway safety.
The National Kickoff Webinar on November 17, 2025, will include stories from responders and highlight nationwide safety efforts.
