On Friday, July 11, 2025, an early morning commute in Flushing, Queens, turned dangerous when an MTA Q20 bus jumped the curb and crashed into a traffic light pole, leaving eight people injured. Initial reports indicate investigators are reviewing whether driver fatigue may have been a factor.
The crash occurred around 6:00 a.m. at the intersection of 57th Road and Main Street. Eyewitness News ABC7NY released surveillance footage showing the bus veering off course, mounting the curb, and striking a metal pole with enough force to tear it from its foundation. Two pedestrians at the bus stop narrowly avoided being hit.
One of the passengers, Ken Baur, recalled the moment of impact:
“I was all the way in the back and all of a sudden the bus hit the curb… I went this way and that way and banged into the side of the bus.”
Investigation Points to Driver Fatigue
Seven passengers and the bus driver were taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Queens Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The the MTA says the driver, The MTA stated that the driver, who was in a probationary period, initially claimed he misjudged the turn
However, investigators reviewing onboard video footage are examining whether driver fatigue may have contributed to the crash. No signs of a medical emergency or distraction were identified. The MTA has removed the driver from service and will conduct further testing as part of the standard investigation protocol.
