A routine fire call turned into chaos when a massive explosion followed an NYC car fire in the Bronx, injuring seven firefighters and shaking an entire neighborhood.

Firefighters Injured After NYC Car Fire Leads to Explosion

According to an ABC7 Eyewitness News report, the explosion happened Wednesday evening around 7 p.m. on a Bronx street filled with parked vehicles. What began as a small trash fire on the sidewalk quickly spread to nearby cars, causing one to ignite and erupt into a fiery blast.

Residents watched from their windows as firefighters battled the flames. Within seconds, a ball of fire engulfed the street, creating panic among those nearby. Eyewitness Liza Almonte, who works in a nearby building with children with autism, described the terrifying moment:

“I saw garbage, debris, and cars on fire… and then suddenly, a huge explosion. I didn’t know how to get out.”

The FDNY confirmed that seven firefighters were injured, including five who suffered serious burns to their hands and faces. Three were hospitalized, while others received treatment on the scene. FDNY Chief of Department John Esposito said all of the injured firefighters were awake, alert, and speaking but were being closely monitored for burn-related injuries.

Understanding How Car Fires Can Escalate

The incident underscores the unpredictable danger of urban car fires. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports that vehicle fires account for roughly one in eight of all reported fires in the U.S., with debris or flammable materials often accelerating their spread. Similarly, the U.S. Fire Administration notes that car fires involving fuel tanks or nearby combustibles can result in explosive reactions, especially when trash, gas vapors, or damaged electrical systems are present.

In densely populated neighborhoods like the the Bronx, narrow streets and closely parked cars make containment difficult. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) advises that even small fires can grow quickly in urban areas when debris or refuse piles are left near vehicles or buildings (FEMA.gov).

The New York City Fire Department continues to investigate what caused the initial trash fire and whether external factors contributed to the rapid spread of flames. One responding fire engine also sustained minor damage from the blast.

Public Safety and Fire Prevention in NYC

While most New Yorkers never witness such a dramatic scene, fires like this highlight the need for public awareness and prevention. According to the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT), keeping sidewalks clear of debris and maintaining safe parking distances from fire hydrants can give emergency crews vital seconds to act.

In this Bronx incident, quick response by firefighters prevented a far greater disaster. Despite the explosion and burn injuries, all seven firefighters are expected to make a full recovery.
