A major I-81 crash in LaFayette, New York, left several people injured, including one critically, after more than 30 cars and three trucks were involved in a massive pileup Thursday afternoon, according to the New York State Police (troopers.ny.gov).

What Happened on I-81 Southbound

Authorities said the crash occurred around 2:08 p.m. on January 15, 2026, near mile marker 70.87 on Interstate 81 South, just past the Tully/LaFayette line (syracuse.com).

Trooper Jennifer Jiron, a spokesperson for the the State Police, confirmed that at least 10 people were injured, and one victim was listed in critical condition following the multi-vehicle pileup (syracuse.com).

Traffic was completely shut down in both directions for several hours as emergency crews responded. According to the Onondaga County 911 Center, more than seven ambulances and eight fire departments were dispatched to the scene (wbng.com). The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) reported that southbound lanes were closed near Exit 73, with traffic detoured to Route 20 and U.S. 11 as crews cleared debris and assisted victims (511NY).

State Police said heavy snowfall and poor visibility in the area were contributing factors. Local officials, including LaFayette Town Supervisor Bill McConnell, told Syracuse.com that weather conditions had been “heavy earlier in the afternoon,” making driving “especially dangerous”.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), winter weather contributes to thousands of crashes across the U.S. each year, particularly on high-speed corridors like Interstate 81 (nhtsa.gov).

In New York State, snow- or ice-related crashes account for approximately 16% of all weather-related accidents, often leading to multi-car collisions when drivers fail to slow down or maintain distance (nhtsa.gov).

Motorists are reminded to:

  • Reduce speed in snowy or icy conditions.

  • Avoid sudden braking or lane changes.

  • Keep emergency supplies and blankets in vehicles.

  • Check the 511NY system for real-time road closures and weather alerts.
