The Latest: Fatal Pedestrian Crash Near Lincoln Tunnel Causes Major NJ/NY Traffic Delays

A Morning Commute Turned Tragic Due to a Fatal Pedestrian Crash Near Lincoln Tunnel

A fatal pedestrian crash near the Lincoln Tunnel caused major traffic disruptions across New Jersey on the morning of Wednesday, November 12, 2025. According to ABC7 Eyewitness News, the incident occurred on Route 495 westbound near Kennedy Boulevard in Union City, when a man walking along the roadway was struck by a vehicle.

Authorities from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey confirmed that the pedestrian was fatally injured at the scene. The crash led to the immediate diversion of westbound traffic onto local streets, while inbound traffic toward Manhattan was heavily impacted due to rubbernecking delays.

Traffic and Transit Impacts

By midmorning, traffic congestion from the Lincoln Tunnel pedestrian crash extended several miles, with inbound lanes experiencing backups as far as Route 3 by the Meadowlands.

To alleviate the situation, NJ Transit announced that bus tickets and passes were being cross-honored by NJ Transit Rail and PATH, allowing commuters alternate travel options during the disruption.

Compounding the situation, officials were forced to close the express bus lane, mixing buses with regular traffic and increasing travel times. As of 10:30 a.m., inbound delays were estimated at approximately 30 minutes, while outbound traffic continued to move slowly as cleanup and investigation efforts took place.

Ongoing Investigation

The cause of the Lincoln Tunnel pedestrian crash remains under active investigation. Officials have not yet released further details regarding the identity of the victim or the driver involved. The Port Authority Police Department and local investigators are reviewing roadway conditions and any potential contributing factors, such as visibility or traffic flow at the time of the incident.

Pedestrian Safety on Major Corridors

The tragic event underscores the ongoing safety challenges faced by pedestrians near major transit routes and tunnels.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), thousands of pedestrians are killed each year in roadway incidents, many occurring in high-traffic areas with complex intersections or limited walking infrastructure.

State and local transportation agencies continue to invest in safety improvements, including better lighting, signage, and barrier protections to reduce risks for pedestrians near highways and tunnel entrances.
