Imagine this: You’re walking through Midtown Manhattan on a quiet Thursday evening, when suddenly, a loud boom shakes the block. That’s what witnesses described after a diesel generator explosion sent debris flying near East 53rd Street between Lexington and Third Avenues, leaving two pedestrians injured, one critically.
According to PIX11 News and CBS News New York, the the explosion happened around 9 p.m. on November 20, 2025, inside a parking garage. Fire officials believe a generator malfunction triggered the blast, causing a metal air vent to rocket into the air and crash down onto two women walking on the opposite sidewalk.
“It was scary, very scary,” said witness Carlos Nanez to PIX11. “The first thing I did was call 911, because I saw the girl was not responding.”
