What began as a routine Monday afternoon in Midtown Manhattan turned chaotic when a truck crashed into a parked van, injuring 10 people and sending the vehicle skidding onto a busy sidewalk. The sudden impact left pedestrians scrambling for safety and sparked an urgent emergency response across Eighth Avenue.
10 Injured After Truck Crashes Into Van in Chelsea
According to ABC7 Eyewitness News, the collision happened around 4 p.m. on Eighth Avenue between West 29th and 30th Streets. A Ryder box truck traveling northbound lost control, striking a parked work van and pushing it forward nearly 30 feet onto the sidewalk. The force of the crash injured 10 people, including eight pedestrians.
Eyewitness Arnitra Elise told reporters that the work van had just parked before the collision occurred. “The van just parked, the people got out the van. Next thing you know, that Ryder van came and smacked it,” she said.
Surveillance video shows the moment the box truck swerved, slammed into the van, and propelled it sideways into a LinkNYC station. Witnesses said they saw pedestrians running for cover as debris flew across the street.

Eyewitnesses Describe a Chaotic Scene
Moments after the impact, bystanders rushed to help the injured. Suzie Ellenton, who was standing nearby, recalled seeing a woman pinned between the van and a building. “I see this car coming up onto the sidewalk and he hit a woman, and she flew into the building,” she said.
Another witness, Mamadou Diallo, described the the aftermath as devastating. “Lots of people on the ground, some people were crawling; almost five or six of them,” he told reporters.
The FDNY confirmed that one pedestrian was critically injured, while the others sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The truck’s driver and passenger were also taken to a hospital for evaluation. Police said the driver remained at the scene and that there was no indication of criminal intent.
Why Chain-Reaction Collisions Are So Dangerous
Incidents like the 10 injured after truck crashes event in Chelsea are a stark reminder of how unpredictable multi-vehicle accidents can be in urban areas. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) notes that large commercial vehicles are involved in nearly 10% of all fatal crashes nationwide, often due to speed, distraction, or sudden lane changes.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) warns that box trucks and delivery vehicles are particularly vulnerable to losing control when loaded unevenly or traveling through congested areas. In New York City, where foot traffic and parked vehicles line nearly every block, even a momentary lapse can trigger catastrophic outcomes.
Pedestrian safety remains a key priority under the NYC Vision Zero Initiative, which has reduced, but not eliminated, serious traffic injuries since its launch in 2014.

Community Response and Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims but confirmed that the NYPD Collision Investigation Squad continues to review surveillance footage and interview witnesses. While one lane of Eighth Avenue reopened later that evening, police urged drivers and pedestrians to avoid the area during cleanup and inspection efforts.
