The National Safety Council (NSC) projects that 424 people may die in traffic crashes during the Labor Day 2025 holiday period, yet that’s actually a 7% decrease compared to last year’s projections.

1. A High-Stakes Holiday
Labor Day weekend remains one of the most dangerous in the U.S. From 6 p.m. on Friday through midnight on Monday during Labor Day weekend, this holiday accounts for over 12% of all traffic fatalities in September on average.
2. More Fatalities Than Other Holidays
Since 2010, Labor Day weekends have seen an average of over 400 traffic-related deaths over the weekend, which is 24% higher than Thanksgiving and 28% higher than Christmas.
3. Alcohol Plays a Major Role
NSC estimates show that 36% of traffic fatalities during the Labor Day period involve an alcohol-impaired driver, highlighting the danger of impaired driving during celebratory weekends.
4. Distracted Driving Spikes
Distracted driving increases on Labor Day: phone use rises 8.3% compared to surrounding Mondays, with 14% more traffic during peak late morning hours.
5. High Projected Fatalities
The NSC’s current projection of 424 deaths carries a 90% confidence interval of 365 to 487 fatalities, reinforcing the serious risk on the roads, even when projections decline.
6. Enforcement Is Nationwide
Federal, state, and local authorities intensify enforcement under the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, running from mid-August through Labor Day. All 50 states participate to curb impaired driving risks.
7. A Growing Trend in Summer Road Dangers
These elevated crash rates are part of a broader seasonal pattern. Across the U.S., summer months, especially between Memorial Day and Labor Day, often referred to in traffic safety research as the ‘100 deadliest days,’ this period sees a disproportionately high number of fatal crashes.
