A tragic Hudson Valley motorcycle crash on August 29, 2025, claimed the life of a motorcyclist on the Taconic State Parkway, a roadway long known for its challenging curves and high accident rates. According to WPDH News, the crash occurred near Exit 5 in Mount Pleasant after the motorcyclist lost control of the motorcycle. Authorities have not yet determined the precise cause. State Police confirmed that after striking a guardrail, the motorcyclist was ejected from the bike and pronounced dead at the scene.
This incident is the latest in a series of fatal accidents on the Taconic State Parkway, a road frequently cited among New York’s most dangerous highways.
Taconic State Parkway: One of the Deadliest Roads in New York
The Taconic State Parkway has a long history of severe accidents due to its narrow lanes, sharp curves, and heavy commuter traffic. Despite a speed limit of just 55 mph, many crashes occur when drivers exceed safe speeds or attempt risky passes on the two-lane highway.

According to the New York State Department of Transportation, the Taconic consistently ranks among the top accident-prone roadways in the state, often cited by transportation analysts as one of the state’s most accident-prone roadways. Its design, dating back to the 1930s, has not fully adapted to modern traffic volumes, leaving drivers with little margin for error on its winding stretches.
Victim Identified, Investigation Ongoing
State Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash, which happened just after 9 p.m. State Police have requested that witnesses or anyone with information contact the New York State Police Troop K barracks in Hawthorne at (914) 742-6057.
Authorities have not yet determined whether speed, weather, or other factors contributed to the accident. However, community members and safety advocates point to the roadway’s design challenges as an ongoing hazard for motorists, particularly motorcyclists who are at higher risk in crashes.
Motorcyclist Fatalities and Statewide Statistics
Motorcyclists represent a disproportionate number of fatalities in New York traffic accidents. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcycles accounted for 14% of all traffic fatalities nationwide in 2023, despite representing only 3% of registered vehicles.
In New York State alone, the Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research reported over 140 motorcyclist deaths in 2024, with many occurring on rural or winding roadways like the Taconic State Parkway.
Community Calls for Safety Improvements
Following this latest tragedy, residents and officials have renewed calls for infrastructure improvements on the Taconic. Suggestions have included:
-
Adding center barriers to prevent head-on collisions
-
Expanding shoulders and lanes where possible
-
Installing additional speed monitoring devices
While some upgrades have been made in recent years, some safety advocates have suggested that additional infrastructure changes could reduce the risk of future accidents.
