Child Passenger Safety Awareness Week 2025: 5 Safety Facts Every Parent Should Read

Child safely secured in a car seat with sibling in the backseat during Child Passenger Safety Awareness Week 2025.

According to national traffic safety data, an average of three children die, and 429 are injured each day in motor vehicle crashes in the United States (Download the Traffic Safety fact sheet for 2022 NHTSA). With Child Passenger Safety Awareness Week approaching on September 21–27, 2025, including National Seat Check Saturday on September 27 (NHTSA), now is the time for families to review how to keep kids safe on the road.

At WSAT Law, we represent injured victims and their families when accidents result in serious harm. Below, we highlight five key facts every parent should know, supported by official traffic safety data.

1. Child Fatalities in Vehicle Crashes Are Still Too High

In 2023, 555 children under age 13 died in motor vehicle crashes across the U.S., and 190 of those children were unrestrained (NSC Injury Facts). These numbers emphasize why child passenger safety remains a critical concern.

2. Proper Restraints Dramatically Reduce Fatal Injuries

According to the National Safety Council, child safety seats reduce fatal injuries by 71% for infants and 54% for toddlers when used correctly (NSC Injury Facts). Unfortunately, research shows that nearly half of all car seats (46%) are installed incorrectly (Traffic Safety Marketing).

In recognition of Child Passenger Safety Awareness Week 2025, WSAT Law references publicly available resources such as NHTSA’s Car Seat Finder

3. Children Ages 8–12 Face the Highest Risks

Studies confirm that older children transitioning to seat belts too soon face the highest number of crash fatalities (Traffic Safety Marketing). Proper booster seat use for this age group remains essential to prevent serious injuries.

4. National Seat Check Saturday: Free Resources for Parents

As part of Child Passenger Safety Awareness Week, National Seat Check Saturday on September 27 offers free inspection events where certified technicians check car seat installation for families (NHTSA).

Parents can find local events and get expert help ensuring proper seat installation.

5. Daily Crash Data Show Why Awareness Matters

Federal crash data reveal that on average, three children are killed and 429 injured every day in vehicle crashes (NHTSA CrashStats). Of those killed, 39% were unrestrained, highlighting the importance of both proper restraints and increased safety awareness.
