City engineer reported 30,000 to 50,000 gallos of raw sewage spilled into the Pisactaqua river.
The accident occurred when an excavator hit and damaged an old pipe, causing it to leak. Waste removal trucks were brought in to suck up thousands of gallons that had entered the river from the broken force main.
The break occurred at about 9:30 a.m. Feb. 3
“The city is investigating the cause of the break and discussing further measures with the contractor and engineer for the Peirce Island Wastewater Treatment Facility upgrade to prevent such incidents in the future” City engineer, Terry Desmarais.
